![]() ![]() underwound, 50s style P-bass pickups won't have the clarity of hotter, more aggressive modern pickups) but that applies for any form of bass and guitar. some P bass pickups are less suited for it (i.e. It's just a different version of the same sort of sound, really.Īnd, of course, many people just prefer the ergonomics of a J bass or other more modern designs, especially in a genre like metal where wide necks are less often popular.Įven still, having a bridge pickup isn't at all a requirement for clarity, nor tightness or low end from low notes. Stingrays I personally don't find to be any more or less muddy than a P-bass, and tonally they're both very midrange focused instruments so that makes sense. They have lots of low end, sure, but tend to disappear in the mix and become mushy once the other instruments show up. ![]() J basses are often notoriously tricky to get clarity out of in a downtuned metal mix because of the scoop that running both pickups at full volume introduces. I'm not sure your opinion is overriding the entirety of the rest of the music making world, gotta be honest. World renowned musicians have played them on tour to great effect. Producers the world over have been getting good tones out of low tuned P-basses for decades. I've provided examples of heavy music that has P-basses with low end, P-basses with tightness, and P-basses with a mix of both. Still has definition to it even despite the inherent limitations from the way I record bass. ![]() Basically the same signal chain but with different mic choice and EQ to retain more lows, since it fits this project better. This is a demo I recently made for another project, using the exact same bass. So of course my tone doesn't end up being as polished and perfectly tuned as others, but that's a trade off I make for my own production. It's always one amp, one cab, and a couple mics on it, and no DI with minimal compression. And again, even then, the bass is clearly present, audible, and defined.Īdditionally, I don't multitrack my bass recordings like 99% of metal producers do now. I don't like my bass tone in metal to have excessive subby low end because it sounds like shit to me, and I emphasize the midrange because that's where you get the growl from. Now, no, it's not an immense amount of low end. That's weird, because I am definitely feeling the bass from that track vibrating the entire room I'm sitting in at the moment. And probably can be produced by any bass with a neck peckup cause its so disformed and muddy. Just a certain sound I think no one would have looked for. If you dont even try, then a p would work yeah. Your own project: Yeah, (again the same with Pullbearer) theres no low end comming from the bass.Just like the isnt from KoRn. Maybe if you have a cheap P-bass copy with muddy ceramic bar and steel rod pickups you'll have a problem, but I'm going to point out that I've got a fairly bright vintage spec p-bass (not a dark overwound one) in S bridge is way better than the majority of bulky cast zinc bridges out there, you can stump for machined brass high mass and they work very well, but the only place the p-bass design falls down is playing very low string tension.
